Unit 7 Wetlands 湿地
Objective 目标
1.Understand the physical characteristics of Utah's wetlands.
2.Describe the common plants and animals found in Utah wetlands and how these organisms have adapted to the environment in which they live.

7.1 Wetlands 湿地

Wetlands湿地:Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil all or most of the year. Most of Utah wetlands are located near the Great Salt Lake. Wetlands are found at both high and low elevation.

7.2 Three types of wetlands

               三种湿地

Marsh: Wetlands that grow only grasses, reeds, and are mostly treeless.

Bogs: Wetlands that are covered by moss and are spongy.

Swamp: Wetlands that mostly have trees and shrubs

7.3 Adaptation 适应

Adaptation适应:Living organisms that change in order to survive in their habitat.

Cattail 香蒲
Cattail seeds have special adaptations to maximize the possibility of their seeds landing on water. When the seed lands on water, the umbrella shaped fluff continues to catch the wind. So they skate across the surface for a distance before the fluff folds and the seed sinks.
Cottonwood Tree三角叶杨
They don't do well with shade, so they grow really fast to get them to the sun before other trees.
Bulrush 芦苇
Their roots can survive living in water.
Muskrat 麝鼠
The muskrat is capable of remaining submerged up to 15 minutes if in a relaxed state.
Beaver 海狸
They have webbed feet to help them swim better in the water.
Tiger Salamander 虎螈
They can save their lives by losing their tails

7.4 Why are wetlands important?

Wetlands are a valuable resource to control flooding and help to keep our water clean. They are home to many plants and animals.

Are you ready for the unit test?
